Taking errors out of the equation in exam marking

Author: Martyn Tebb

This project, for a large multi-national pharmaceutical, saw PMI build an internal online e-exam system to reduce Green Belt marking errors for over 2500 users and took place over 2 months – with incredible savings made.

The Challenge

To develop a new way to operate internal ‘Green Belt’ examinations for delegates around the world to replace classroom oriented traditional paper-based examinations. The objectives were to increase the speed of examination marking, reduce the opportunities for error such as lost papers and increase availability for examination sitting.

How we helped

Our solutions included the development of a secure and versa􀦧 le online pla􀄤 orm to operate
the examinations. A database of questions was built from which the exam system randomly generates unique question sets for each delegate.

The examination is now deployed on request and available across time zones with user support. Exam results are published upon completion of the questions. Users who do not pass the exam receive an automatically generated coaching report helping them to understand where they went wrong so they can plan for re-test.

  • Exam result lead time reduced from several weeks to a few seconds!
  • Opportunities for errors were drastically cut
  • Cost savings in excess £100k were made
